Dermatologists classify skin by UV response using the Fitzpatrick scale, which runs from Type I (very fair, always burns, never tans) through Type VI (very dark, never burns). The scale tracks melanin content, which matters here because melanin absorbs and scatters UVB before it can penetrate deep enough to trigger vitamin D synthesis.

Three practical groups cover most people:

  • Fitzpatrick I–II: Very fair to fair. Burns easily, tans little. Lowest melanin: fastest vitamin D production and highest burn risk.
  • Fitzpatrick III–IV: Medium to olive. Sometimes burns, tans readily. Moderate melanin, moderate pace.

The dark-skin vitamin D gap

The bottom row of that table is the one most sun-exposure articles skip. A person with Fitzpatrick V–VI skin at a UV index of 5 needs roughly 30 to 40 minutes, not 15. The standard “15 minutes a day” recommendation was calibrated for lighter skin. Follow someone else’s number faithfully and you get someone else’s results.

The data backs this up. A 2011 analysis of US NHANES data by Forrest and Stuhldreher found that 82.1% of non-Hispanic Black adults and 69.2% of Hispanic adults had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL, compared with 30.9% of non-Hispanic White adults. For people with darker skin at higher latitudes, the problem compounds: they need far more UV exposure than fair-skinned people, in a place where the vitamin D window is already shorter and shuts down entirely in winter.

By the time your skin turns pink, you’re already in sunburn territory, and your vitamin D synthesis stopped some time before that. Set a timer and leave when it goes off.

UVB converts 7-dehydrocholesterol into previtamin D3, but continued UVB also degrades previtamin D3 into inactive photoproducts (lumisterol and tachysterol). Vitamin D synthesis plateaus well before your skin reaches its burn threshold. Burning adds no extra vitamin D. Set a timer based on your skin type and UV index, then stop.

What else changes your number

This self-limiting plateau prevents toxicity from sun exposure regardless of skin type. Melanin’s role is to slow the initial rate of synthesis, not to cap the upper limit.
